A.I. writing nearly all code in 12 months might actually become true

In March 2025, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said that AI could be writing 90% of code within three to six months and essentially all code within 12 months. He made the prediction during a Council on Foreign Relations conversation.

At first, it appears the CEO is doing this because he needs to make investors/stakeholders happy.

But as you look closer, he isn't saying that A.I. will become so good in 12 months that it will replace majority of Software Engineers.

I have been working with LLMs to write code, and am seeing how they are improving. And, at the current rate, I believe LLMs can get to a point (within 1 year) where they will be writing majority of our code (with us prompting them)

AI writing nearly all code does not necessarily mean software engineers disappear. It means software engineers will write less and less hand-written code.

Much of their time will shift toward specifying what to build, prompting and guiding AI, reviewing its output, and making the engineering decisions that require judgment.

Thus, it is very much possible that LLMs can become good enough, where Software Engineers will hand write/type only a minority part of the code in our work!
